Where Jewish life once filled whole towns
Before the Second World War, the towns of Galicia — the historic region stretching across southern Poland — were home to hundreds of Jewish communities. In many of them, Jewish families made up a large part of the population and shaped the town's trade, crafts, religious life and everyday rhythm for generations.
Tarnów, about 80 km east of Krakow, was one of the most important of these centres: before the war, Jews made up nearly half of its inhabitants. Today, the remains of the Old Synagogue, the historic Jewish cemetery and the streets of the former Jewish quarter still tell that story.
A short drive north, Dąbrowa Tarnowska is home to one of the region's most striking survivors — a 19th-century synagogue, restored and reopened as a cultural centre, with painted ceilings and an exhibition devoted to the town's Jewish residents. Together, the two towns offer a moving, human-scale picture of Jewish Galicia that a city tour alone cannot give.

Please Note
Opening hours of the synagogue in Dąbrowa Tarnowska and access to some cemeteries vary through the year, so I confirm the exact plan with you and with local contacts before your visit. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as cemetery paths can be uneven.
